Goldberg is back–but why is he fighting for the title?
He challenges Gunther on July 12 at Saturday Night’s Main Event

Bill Goldberg is back.
The former WCW icon appeared on Raw last night, interrupting Gunther, who was celebrating his feat of regaining the World Heavyweight Championship.
Goldberg, 58, was integral to WCW during the “Monday Night Wars” era. His win streak, inflated as it was, stood out as a real source of excitement. The world title match between Goldberg and Hollywood Hogan in the summer of ’98–which was the only time they ever met in a singles match–led to pure pandemonium, as the packed crowd in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome exploded after Goldberg jackhammered Hogan and covered him for the win. While there is considerable (and legitimate) criticism that the match was rushed and should have been held on pay-per-view, there is no denying it was an absolutely incredible moment.
There is a backstory to the Goldberg-Gunther feud. Last September, Gunther had mocked Goldberg as a way to insult Bret Hart. A month later, during the Bad Blood premium live event in Atlanta, Gunther intruded upon Goldberg’s WWE homecoming, insulting him and his family. So it made sense that Goldberg returned during Gunther’s big moment.
But there is no reason for this to be a title match.
Unless, of course, WWE introduces one.
