Seth Rollins wins Money in the Bank–and R-Truth returns
When it came to Truth, WWE listened to its fan base

R-Truth and John Cena extend their story at Money in the Bank
Chalk one up for the fan base.
And, for that matter, the roster.
Less than a week after announcing that WWE was not going to renew his contract, R-Truth returned at Money in the Bank. He cost John Cena the match, which was a tag with Logan Paul against Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso, giving Rhodes the upper hand that led to the victory.
That was fascinating on a few different levels. For starters, it was WWE admitting its mistake by opting not to renew Truth’s contract. In addition to a swarm of support from the fan base, the locker room united over Truth’s dismissal. So it was telling to see him return, which, as I wrote a couple of days ago, was a chance for WWE as whole to show that they listen to their paying customers.
And that’s a positive. So it was befuddling to see Paul “Triple H” Levesque struggle take a different approach with the question about bringing Truth back during the post-show press conference.
Is Levesque worried that Nick Khan is going to receive the lion’s share of credit for bringing Truth back? Or perhaps he is wary of setting a precedent where he is asked why he released certain talent. But when asked about Truth’s return, Levesque opted not to get into the details–instead inferring that it was all part of the show.
Explanation aside, WWE’s actions were what stood out here. The message was loud and clear: they are paying full attention to their fan base, in person and online.
The finish of the main event–where Truth cost Cena the match–also breathes new life into the Truth-Cena feud. That should build to an entertaining match on Raw or SmackDown, instead of the rushed affair we watched when they wrestled a couple weeks ago on Saturday Night’s Main Event. But I cannot see it extending nearly two more months to SummerSlam.
That leads to my next question–what happens to Cena at SummerSlam?
After last night’s finish, it would make sense for Rhodes to get his rematch. That, however, isn’t the only option. Roman Reigns could return and challenge Cena. Or CM Punk could call his shot, giving the people a long-awaited match between the two eternal rivals.
Rhodes, Reigns, or Punk–those are the only three realistic options for Cena at SummerSlam. And since that would be a very quick turnaround for Rhodes–and Reigns wouldn’t be interested in a match he is bound to lose–that narrows the field to Punk.
